In 2006, my husband and I decided to flip our house. We had been living in the house for about 5 years, and we were ready to move. Since the house was built in the early 1900s, we felt that if we worked on the house, we could turn a profit. I was very excited to begin the project.

We started by outlining what we were going to do in each room. We decided to focus on five rooms in the house. These rooms were the dining room, the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom and the upstairs bathroom. My husband was in charge of the heavy remodeling and I was in charge of the decorating, including painting. It was all very exciting when we first started. In total, the project took about 6 months to finish.

During this time, I learned how difficult it was to live in a construction zone. We had to work on one room at a time, because all of the furniture had to be in the other rooms. We started in the kitchen with Silestone countertops. Are Silestone countertops expensive? Yes, compared to granite they are. Then we moved into the bathroom where we installed Silestone as well.

On top of this, we worked through the spring and summer, with no air conditioning. Needless to say, it was a very long and hot summer. Since the house was so old, we found many problems throughout the house. When we took the paneling off the walls, we found that there was no dry wall. This added an extra step into our project, as we had not accounted for dry wall. Thankfully, we had budgeted extra money in case of an emergency. I will never forget the day when we were finally finished.

I was exhausted and exhilarated all at the same time. The project was a success. We had remodeled the house. We enjoyed it for all of 4 months. We put it on the market and two weeks later, we had an offer. We made a nice profit and we were able to buy our new house. One important thing that I learned from remodeling our house was that I never wanted to do it again. While my husband and I learned a lot about fixing things and building thigns while we were remodeling, the main thing that I learned was that I did not truly enjoy it. Now when I need to fix something in my house, I call a professional.
